The Required Inspections Table shown below lists those inspections that must be performed to verify that your work complies with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code. Please note that Virginia’s Building Code prohibits the use of any mechanical equipment prior to approval of all required inspections. We hope this list is beneficial to you throughout the course of your project. Building, Plumbing, Electrical and Fire Protection work require additional permits and inspections. Separate notices are available to explain the inspections required for each type of permit.

* A plumbing permit and inspections are required only if plumbing fixtures are being installed as part of the project.
** The permit applicant may obtain either a plumbing permit or a mechanical permit to install gas piping or appliances.
Explanation of Inspections
The following is a brief description for each type of inspection listed in the Required Inspections Table. These descriptions provide examples of the basic construction features that are inspected. The descriptions are not inclusive of all code criteria that are evaluated during and inspection.
[200] Rough-in: Inspects exhaust fan and dryer vents and all ducts prior to being concealed within walls, ceilings or floors. All duct register openings in floors must be covered.
[205] Gas Piping Rough-in: Inspects the location, sizing, installation and pressure test for all gas pipes prior to concealment by walls, floors or ceilings.
[210] Underground Storage Tank: Inspects the installation of fuel tanks prior to backfill. Leak and corrosion protection, overfill prevention, tank construction and bed support are checked during this inspection.
[215] Gas Piping Final: All equipment shall be installed, hooked up and in working condition. The gas meter shall be installed. All exposed gas pipes on the outside of the building that are not galvanized or copper must be corrosion protected (painted). All copper gas pipes must be marked.
[290] Final Mechanical: All heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment must be installed and operational. Gas pipe must be connected to all gas appliances. All electrical wiring and thermostats must be installed at this time. All flue vents and openings from the exhaust fans must be installed.
[295] Other Mechanical Inspections: This would cover any other mechanical equipment or appliances installed, such as gas pumps and gas station equipment, gas logs and gas fireplaces.
