History Lecture: Brown’s Island Explosion

April 7, 2022 at 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Victims of the Brown’s Island Explosion

The 1863 Brown’s Island Explosion is one of the most tragic events of the Civil War in Richmond. Fifty died at the munitions plant, mostly women and girls. While the cause was determined (careless handling by Mary Ryan), the fate of the victims is not as well known. Historian Bert Dunkerly will share his research on the treatment of the wounded, the fate of the survivors, and the burial locations of the victims.
