Bring a water bottle. Activities will include preparing trees and tree wells for planting\, amending soil\, planting trees\, and mulching and watering around planting sites. DESCRIPTION:This hands-on training will equip participants with essential skills in: \n\nTree identification\nInvasive species identification\nTree canopy assessment methods\nConducting tree inventories\nUsing GIS-based tools and software for field data collection and mapping\n\nParticipants will learn how geographic information systems (GIS) technology is used to document tree locations\, assess canopy coverage\, and collect environmental data that supports long-term planning and restoration efforts. Volunteers will gain practical experience using digital mapping and data collection tools commonly used in urban forestry and environmental conservation projects. \nDesigned for Henrico County staff and summer interns\, this opportunity is also open to community members interested in supporting local environmental and reforestation efforts. \nParticipants who complete the training will be eligible to sign up for future site-specific canopy assessment and inventory projects within Henrico County parks. DESCRIPTION:Fun in the water starts with safety! \nThe Henrico County Police Division\, Division of Fire\, Outreach and Engagement\, Recreation and Parks and YMCA of Greater Richmond are hosting a free water safety event on Saturday\, July 18\, 2026\, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Eastern Henrico Recreation Center (1440 N. Laburnum Ave) and Frank J. Thornton YMCA Aquatic Center. \nThis is an opportunity to learn about the resources available in Henrico County and tips for water safety\, whether in a pool\, lake or river. \nIn 2025\, Henrico County experienced several drownings of children. Public safety personnel came together to create the “Splash Smart Henrico!” initiative which is focused on educating our community members about water safety and the resources available in the area. \nWHAT TO EXPECT\n\nSwim safety resources/vendors in Henrico County;\nCPR demonstrations (11 a.m.\, 11:30 a.m.\, 12 p.m.\, 12:30 p.m.)\nLife jacket fittings for children;\nSafety Around Water Stations (12 p.m.) provided by the YMCA of Greater Richmond at the Frank J. Thornton Aquatic Center\nPrize giveaways\, food trucks\, splash pad & family fun!\n\nWHAT TO BRING\nChildren are encouraged to wear their swimsuits in order to take part in the “Safety Around Water” demonstration and for use of the splash pad. \nThis event is rain or shine.
