Henrico releases ‘request for interest’ for arena-anchored mixed-use development at Best Products Reimagined site

The Henrico Economic Development Authority issued a “request for interest” (RFI) solicitation for a mixed-use development on property that once served as headquarters for the retail chain Best Products, along interstates 95 and 295 and East Parham Road. Master developers, arena operators and other prospective partners will have until Monday, July 28, to respond formally with submissions of a “statement of interest” in the development. Henrico Sports & Events Center to Remain Home of Prestigious A-10 Women’s Basketball Championship

The Henrico Sports & Events Center has hosted the Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Basketball Championship since 2024. The marquee event, which is held in early March, had been planned to remain in Henrico through 2026. With the A-10's announcement, the tournament will extend its stay in Henrico through 2029. County poised for continued growth with Sports & Events Center opening in fall

Visitors spent more than $1.7 billion in Henrico during 2022. That's the highest total of any locality in central Virginia and the fifth highest in Virginia, according to an annual study for the Virginia Tourism Corp.

Henrico’s total includes sales of $406 million on food and beverage, $226 million on lodging, $165 million on retail, $167 million on recreation and about $754 million on transportation. Overall, spending by tourists and other visitors to Henrico jumped by 27.2% from 2021.

Dennis Bickmeier has been appointed to lead a new authority that will oversee Henrico County’s sports tourism program and manage its private-public facilities, including an indoor events center under construction at Virginia Center Commons.

Tour sharpens vision for indoor sports and convocation center

Update: On Aug. 13, the Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 to authorize the county manager to request detailed proposals for an indoor sports and convocation center. The six entities that submitted initial proposals will be invited to offer detailed proposals that would include a controllable site for the center and the county’s purchase price for the land.

Henrico officials recently toured an indoor sports and events venue in Rocky Mount, N.C. as the county prepares to sharpen its pursuit of a similar facility here.
