Henrico to offer classes March 27, April 19 on treating opioid overdoses with naloxone

Henrico Area Mental Health & Developmental Services (MH/DS) will present a free class Tuesday, March 27 and Thursday, April 19 on how to administer naloxone to potentially save the life of someone who has overdosed on opioids.

The Revive! Opioid Overdose and Naloxone Education for Virginia class will be offered from 1:30 to 3 p.m. March 27 at the Varina Area Library, 1875 New Market Road, and from 5 to 6:30 p.m. April 19 in the clubhouse at Oakland Village Apartments, 1400 Old Bronze Drive.

Each session is open to the public, but registration is required for the March 27 session and for the April 19 session.

Naloxone, which is available in Virginia from pharmacists without a prescription, can temporarily reverse the toxic effects of an opioid or heroin overdose, allowing time to seek professional medical attention. Naloxone is available in a generic form and under the brand name Narcan. The Revive! class, developed by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, will provide hands-on instruction on how to administer the drug in its nasal spray form.
