Payments
TIME TO PAY means the Clerk’s Office will extend the due date of fine(s) and costs due the Court if you need more time than the 30 days allowed by statute. Payment Plans Policy and Procedure information.
Payment of Fines and Costs – Most traffic infractions may be paid prior to the scheduled court date. If you elect to prepay your tickets prior to the court date, you can make payments in the form of cash (in person), personal check, or money order. Checks and money orders should be made payable to the Henrico General District Court. All in person prepayments must be made no later than 4:00pm the business day prior your court date.
You may pay your tickets in person at the Henrico General District Court Clerk’s office, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The General District Court Clerk’s office is located at the Henrico Government Center, Parham and Hungary Spring Road.
If you elect to make your payment by mail, be sure to include the yellow summons, or a copy of the summons, that was issued by the officer. Attach your check or money order to the summons and mail it to the court. NEVER SEND CASH THROUGH THE MAIL. The General District Court does accept payments made with MasterCard/Visa/Discover. A 4% convenience fee will be added for credit/debit card payments.
You may also pay your summons online by going to the Supreme Court website. Online prepayments will not be accepted after 3:30 p.m. the day prior to your court date. A 4% convenience fee will be added for credit/debt card payments.
Trial in Absentia -If payment is not received by your court date the judge may try you in your absence, and impose any fine within statutory guidelines. In addition to the fine imposed and the $66.00 court cost, an additional $35.00 tried in absence fee is assessed. A bill notice will be mailed to you at the address on the summons within 2 business days after your court date. However, it is your responsibility to contact the court to find out how much you owe the court. You will have 30 calendar days to pay all fines and costs owed to the Court. Failure to pay your fines and costs will result in your privilege to drive being suspended and/or revoked by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.
Right to Appeal – If you wish to appeal your case you must note the appeal, in writing, within ten (10) calendar days from your court date. If you have any questions regarding appeal procedures, contact the General District Court Clerk’s office at 501-4723.
Continuances
- Purpose: – To establish policies and procedures to assist individuals when requesting a continuance.
- Policy: – It is the policy of this court that continuances are granted by the presiding Judge and will be reviewed on the court date. Continuances will not be granted prior to the scheduled court date. There are no exceptions.
- Procedure: – Continuances may be requested in writing, or by Facsimile (804) 501-7388. The request should be made as far in advance of the scheduled court date as is practicable. It is the defendant’s duty to contact the court on the scheduled court date, or as soon as possible thereafter, and inquire as to the Judges ruling on the request. If the request is granted, the new court date will be provided to the defendant once the court is contacted. The court will not notify the defendant of the new court date. Failure to contact the court regarding the continuance will result in the defendant being “Tried in Absentia” and fines and costs assessed.
