Henrico Extension to offer food-canning workshops in summer

The Henrico County office of Virginia Cooperative Extension will present a series of workshops this summer to teach basic canning and freezing methods to help preserve food safely and economically.

The Home Food Preservation workshops will begin Friday, June 29 with a class on boiling water canning, which will cover the basics on canning jams, jellies and pickled products.

The series will continue Friday, July 20 with a session on pressure canning, which will highlight canning methods for low-acid foods, such as vegetables, beans and meats. The workshops will conclude Friday, Aug. 17 with a class on boiling water canning and freezing, which will address canning basics for tomatoes and tips on freezing.

All classes will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the demonstration kitchen of the Henrico Human Services Building, 8600 Dixon Powers Drive. Participants will receive canning resources and samples to take home. The cost is $10 per workshop or $25 for the entire series. To register, call (804) 501-5160.
