Forensic Evaluations

The Court Evaluation Unit employs licensed clinical psychologists recognized by the Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Services (DBHDS) as being qualified to perform various types of forensic evaluations.  The Court Evaluation Unit conducts court ordered forensic evaluations for defendants facing legal charges in any of Henrico’s Courts (e.g. Circuit Court, General District Court, or Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court) or defendants facing charges in other jurisdictions but who reside in Henrico County.  The evaluations can be completed in either of the jails operated by Henrico County (for those defendants who have not been granted bail), Henrico Juvenile Detention Center or James River Detention Center (for juvenile defendants), or on an outpatient basis in one of the clinics operated by HAMHDS.  Please note that the Court Evaluation Unit does not perform evaluations for federal courts, nor will it accept appointments for defendants detained in other jurisdictions.  Similarly, as part of their work for the court evaluation unit, the licensed clinical psychologists do not accept retainers for evaluations by defense counsel
