Henrico and Richmond exhibit regional cooperation during Henrico’s planned water plant maintenance

Following the June 30 Richmond City Council and Henrico Board of Supervisors joint regional water meeting, the City and Henrico continue to strengthen cooperation. Public utilities leaders for Richmond and Henrico are working together to ensure water flows are unimpacted during Henrico County’s planned maintenance on the water treatment facility today.

Henrico will be completing electrical maintenance today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the plant will be without power during this time. In preparation for the planned power outage, both localities have filled all water reserve tanks, and Richmond will increase the volume of water supplied to Henrico. This process will be monitored closely to ensure system demands are met and that there is no impact to customers supplied by either system.

“We appreciate Richmond’s cooperation as we complete this necessary maintenance on our water plant,” Henrico Director of Public Utilities Bentley Chan said. “This type of regional collaboration is crucial during proactive and planned maintenance so no customers in either locality will have impact to their water service.”

The City of Richmond’s Water Treatment Plant can treat and supply up to 132 million gallons of finished drinking water per day (MGD). Historical peak demand during summer months is approximately 96 MGD, allowing capacity to supply the additional water to Henrico.

“As has been highlighted in recent months, ongoing improvements and upkeep of infrastructure presents various challenges, Richmond is thankful to be in a position to assist Henrico as a regional partner. These partnerships with the state and our wholesale customers are critical to ensure the Greater Richmond Area is strengthened and prepared to address any challenge presented to our water systems,” Richmond DPU Director Scott Morris said.
