Henrico County will celebrate Active Aging Week from Oct. 6 to 12 by offering free workshops and events to promote community connection, volunteerism and healthy living among adults ages 50 and older.
Active Aging Week is organized by the Outreach & Engagement Agency in partnership with the Division of Recreation & Parks, Henrico County Public Library and The Span Center. All activities are free and open to the public. Registration is required only for the Annual Active Aging Walk & Fitness Forum on Friday, Oct. 10.
- Monday, Oct. 6, Home Safety and Fall Prevention workshop, 2 p.m. at the Glen Allen Branch Library, 10501 Staples Mill Road.
- Monday, Oct. 6, Job Readiness for Older Adults workshop, 2 p.m. at the Tuckahoe Area Library, 1901 Starling Drive.
- Tuesday, Oct. 7, Generations Today, an intergenerational program that invites older adults and family members to participate in fitness and movement-based games, 10 a.m. at the Deep Run Recreation Center, 9900 Ridgefield Parkway.
- Wednesday, Oct. 8, screening of “Thelma,” 10 a.m. at Henrico Theatre, 305 E. Nine Mile Road. The 2024 comedy film follows a 93-year-old woman who falls victim to scammers and then sets out to get her money back.
- Thursday, Oct. 9, Health and Fitness Expo, 10 a.m. at the Eastern Henrico Recreation Center, 1440 N. Laburnum Ave. Attendees will connect with local vendors, explore wellness resources and participate in fitness demonstrations, including yoga, line dancing, Zumba, pickleball and senior wellness activities.
- Friday, Oct. 10, Annual Active Aging Walk & Fitness Forum, 10 a.m.-noon at the Henrico Sports & Events Center, 1 All Star Boulevard. Older adults of all abilities will be able to share a walk, participate in fitness classes and discover active-living resources tailored to the needs of older residents of Henrico. Light refreshments will be provided. The forum is sponsored by VCU Health and CenterWell.
“Everyone 50 and older is welcome at these free events,” said Ashlee Giles, Henrico’s advocate for the aging. “The Annual Active Aging Walk & Fitness Forum is an energetic celebration of active aging and a chance for older adults to discover new ways to stay engaged, connected and healthy in our community.”
