BASIC SHERIFF’S DEPUTY TRAINING ACADEMY
The Henrico County Sheriff’s Office Training Academy is a Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) certified independent training academy. Our academy staff is augmented with in-house certified instructors and instructors from outside agencies.
The Sheriff’s Office provides intense and comprehensive jail, court security and civil process training in the Commonwealth for its deputy sheriffs. The Academy is a 13-week, 480-hour course of academic and practical instruction that focuses on fire arms training, jail & court security, the Code of Virginia, defensive tactics, service of civil process, firefighting, first aid, CPR, and general law enforcement.
CONTINUED DEPUTY TRAINING
To meet Department of Criminal Justice Services standards, all deputy sheriffs must attend and successfully complete a minimum of forty hours of in-service training. In addition, the academy sponsors training in supervisory/management skills, specialized subjects, mental health, and other relevant subject matter. The Sheriff’s Office works closely with the Henrico Divisions of Police and Fire in order to provide this training. Each Henrico Sheriff’s Deputy must demonstrate proficiency with their issued service weapon as well as with other specialized and chemical weapons.
During the Sheriff’s Academy, recruits are given in-depth training with their weapon and must continue to requalify throughout their service with the Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies are encouraged to continue their training through both professional and academic programs. This includes attendance at institutes of higher learning and specialized training offered at many levels of corrections and law enforcement.
SUMMER BASIC JAILOR ACADEMY
The Henrico County Sheriff’s Office offers students from participating colleges the opportunity to attend a nine-week Summer Basic Jailor Academy. The academy allows students to earn college credits while simultaneously earning certification as a Jailor/Sheriff Deputy through the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS). Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be eligible for part-time employment in the Henrico Sheriff’s Office.
CAREER DEVELOPMENT
The Sheriff’s Office has a career development program to enhance the deputy’s knowledge, skills and abilities through continuing education, both on a professional and academic level. Members are expected to maintain above-standard ratings to advance through the career development program.
TRAINING
FBI-LEEDA TRAINING
Henrico Sheriff’s Office supervisors participate in classes offered from FBI-LEEDA. Classes consist of three 36-hour sessions to develop leadership skills at the Supervisory, Command and Executive levels. This training allows staff to train with other public safety agencies on methods to improve law enforcement management practices through training, education and networking among police professionals. Currently four members have completed the Supervisor, Command and Executive Leadership training.
CRISIS INTERVENTION TRAINING
Members of the Henrico Sheriff’s Office receive 40 hours of Crisis Intervention Training. Selected members of the Henrico Sheriff’s Office work with the Henrico County Police and Division of Fire, Henrico Area Mental Health and Developmental Services to work with consumers and family members to facilitate effective assistance for person experiencing a mental health crisis.
THE METRO RICHMOND PUBLIC SAFETY LEADERSHIP ACADEMY
Henrico Sheriff’s Office supervisor staff receive 40 hours of training through the Metro Richmond Public Safety Leadership Academy. The academy brings together members from EMS, Fire and Law Enforcement to learn leadership and communication skills from the very best instructors in public safety.
