Description

Henrico County Regional Jail West was opened in 1980 and underwent a major expansion in 1996. It is a maximum security facility that houses both pre-trial and post-trial inmates. It is also the headquarters of the Office of the Sheriff, Administrative Services, Court Services and Human Resources.

The Office of the Sheriff

Jail West serves as the Henrico County Sheriff’s Office headquarters, holding the administrative offices for the Sheriff’s Office which include the Sheriff and his command staff. To schedule an appointment to see the Sheriff or any other members of the Sheriff’s Office command staff, call (804) 501-5860 Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm.

Jail Security

Deputies assigned to Jail Security and Jail Services maintain the safety and order of the facility. They provide security to the community by preventing jail disturbances or escapes. Jail Security staff move inmates throughout the facility and see to their safety and well being. The Intake & Release Booking section uses state of the art imaging technology to assist in the processing and releasing of inmates.

Jail Services

Jail Services staff provide programs and services to the inmate population to include laundry, recreation, virtual visitation, property control, mail delivery, religious services, a wide range of mental health/substance abuse services and education. These programs are offered through the cooperative effort of staff, community volunteers and outside agencies. The following are examples of the programs offered:

  • GED Preparation and Testing
  • Computer Technology
  • Parenting and Fatherhood classes
  • Substance abuse and relapse prevention
  • Group and individual counseling

Administrative Services

Administrative Services is composed of Training (which includes the Henrico County Sheriff’s Office Training Academy), Special Operations, Finance, Property Control, Audit & Accreditation and Computer Support. The Sheriff’s Office conducts its own DCJS certified academy comprised mostly of DCJS certified instructors from the department. The Sheriff’s Office Response Team (SORT) is part of Special Operations and is used for jail disturbance control. Special Operations also conducts firearms and chemical munitions training/qualification for the Office. Audit & Accreditation ensures compliance with state standards and is currently revising policies and procedures to gain accreditation with the American Correctional Association (ACA).

Court Services

Court Services is made up of Court Security, Civil Process and Transportation. The deputies assigned to Court Security provide security to the Circuit/General District Courthouse and the Juvenile & Domestic Relations Courthouse. They maintain safety and control in the courtrooms and prevent unauthorized entry of weapons and contraband into the courthouse through the use of full body metal detectors and x-ray machines. Civil Process deputies serve thousands of civil papers a month to include garnishments, summonses and other court orders. They utilize an automated tracking system designed by the Sheriff’s Office to provide citizens with updated information about these court ordered civil actions. They also perform court ordered evictions, levies and mental commitments. Transportation logs thousands of miles across the Commonwealth taking inmates to and from Henrico court appearances, medical appointments and Department of Corrections transfers.
