Residential leaf-collection programs to begin Nov. 4; changes to vacuum services

Henrico County will begin providing annual residential leaf-collection services Monday, Nov. 4, with both free and paid options available for residents.

Free collection of bagged leaves will get underway Nov. 4 and continue through Feb. 8. Crews will work week to week in five zones; each zone will be collected twice over the course of the program. Residents living outside the zones can order free pickup of bagged leaves by calling (804) 727-8779.

Residents are encouraged to place leaf bags at the curb or road’s edge by 7 a.m. Monday of their collection week. Bags should be free of trash and debris and must be accessible from the street as crews are not authorized to enter private property. There is no limit on the number of bags that residents can place curbside for pickup.

Henrico has contracted with a new vendor, Really Clean Streets (RCS), for vacuum leaf pickup. Several details of this service are different this year than previous years. Starting Monday Oct. 28, residents can schedule their vacuum leaf pickup on RCS’s website, with collection beginning the week of Nov. 4. RCS will pick up leaves beginning the following week for all orders placed by the preceding Friday at 3 p.m. Cost for this service is $30 and must be paid by credit card at the time of scheduling. Vacuum leaf collection will continue through Feb. 28.

Residents should have their loose leaves placed curbside or at the road’s edge by Sunday evening before their scheduled pickup week. Leaves must be free of trash and debris and must be accessible from the street. Orders will not be refunded if leaves are not ready when RCS arrives for a scheduled pickup.

Whether using the paid vacuum service or free bagged pickup, residents are encouraged to avoid placing bags or loose leaves in traffic lanes, parking spaces, storm drains or ditches. In addition to creating a potential traffic hazard, misplaced leaves can block drainage and contribute to stormwater pollution.

Henrico’s public use areas, located at 2075 Charles City Road and 10600 Fords Country Lane, offer residents another disposal option. Bagged leaves will be accepted at no cost from Nov. 4 through Feb. 8. Public use areas are open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. except for certain holidays.
