Board of Supervisors meeting recap: Glen Allen teams honored, reservoir earns distinction from Mid-Atlantic Chapter of APWA

The Glen Allen High School Jaguars’ girls cross country and boys volleyball teams won Virginia High School League Class 5 championships in November.

The Virgil R. Hazelett Reservoir at Cobbs Creek was named the 2026 Project of the Year by the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the American Public Works Association. The reservoir received the award in the category of environment projects of more than $75 million.

Board of Supervisors appoints new Sustainability and Resilience Advisory Committee

The 10 members of the Sustainability and Resilience Advisory Committee will serve as formal advisors to the county and will provide a community perspective on issues related to environmental sustainability, resilience and strategies for adapting to climate change.

SRAC will complement the work of two other groups focused on the environment - Henrico's Environmental Action Resource Team and Keep Henrico Beautiful.

Fairfield’s Roscoe Cooper III to lead Henrico Board of Supervisors in 2026

In outlining his priorities for the year, Cooper said Henrico will continue to support investments in education as well as affordable homeownership, pedestrian safety and economic development.

“I’m filled with both excitement and humility, and a sense of duty as we embark on this journey together, continuing our collective efforts to make Henrico County an even better place to live, work, play and visit, and raise your family,” he said.

Henrico Board of Supervisors adopts tighter regulations on vape shops

Tobacco and vap shop businesses in Henrico County that have been inspected.
New stores offering products defined as “recreational substances” would be allowed only in the B-3 Business and M-1 Industrial zoning districts and would also be required to receive a provisional use permit. That would require public hearings and approval from the Board of Supervisors.

In addition, such stores would not be allowed within 1,000 feet of a school or 2,000 feet of a religious institution, day care center, public park or existing store selling recreational substances.

Board of Supervisors recap: Henrico Christmas Mother preparing to support more families in need during holidays

The Henrico County Christmas Mother program will serve 1,625 families during the holidays, an increase of 100 families over last year, according to Ann McGee, the 2025 Henrico County Christmas Mother. McGee, a former executive director of NOVA of Virginia Aquatics, said 500 volunteers will assist this year's effort. Henrico, Happily Natural Day to establish community farm in Varina

The community farm on the 1,052-acre Runnymeade property will encompass 10 acres during its pilot phase and could expand to 20 acres and potentially more, depending on community interest.

Farmers will be able to apply to use plots as small as a half-acre, beginning in late fall. Once it is operating at capacity year-round, the farm’s annual yield could total as much as 500,000 pounds of produce – a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains and flowers.

Board of Supervisors recap: Public hearing on animal cruelty registry set for Dec. 2

At its Oct. 28 meeting, the board initiated its process to consider establishing a local animal cruelty registry. A public hearing for the proposed ordinance will be advertised for Dec. 2. A state law that took effect in July 2024 allows localities to create a registry that includes the names and relevant information of people convicted of certain felony offenses of animal cruelty. The veteran supervisors were elected by unanimous votes during the board’s organizational meeting Tuesday. Joining Nelson and Schmitt on the dais are newly elected Supervisors Roscoe D. Cooper III, of the Fairfield District; Misty D. Whitehead, of the Three Chopt District; and Jody K. Rogish, of the Tuckahoe District.
