Sign and Pavement Marking Shop

The County of Henrico Sign and Pavement Marking Shop is responsible for many tasks in the County.

  • The fabrication, installation and maintenance of all signs along County maintained roads.
  • The application and maintenance of pavement markings of all County maintained roads.
  • The marking of County intersections for crosswalks and stop bars as well as school messages, railroad or other special messages applied to road surfaces.

The Sign Section is one of the best equipped in the area and is capable of producing any sign needed within the County. Currently we are using a computer aided vinyl cutting plotter that is capable of cutting street signs or any other sign up to 48″ in width. The computer method is used to make specialty signs and other signs that are made in small quantities. The Sign Section also fabricates signs using the silk screening process where a silk screen image is made on a light table and placed on a frame for screening signs with ink.  This process is used when signs are mass produced, such as Stop, Yield, or Speed Limit signs.

The Pavement Marking Section is responsible for installing and maintaining all pavement markings on County maintained roadways.  These markings are installed by either paint, self-adhesive tape, or preformed thermoplastic.  The type of material used is dependent on the pavement type, age of the pavement, and the weather.  The County operates a paint striping truck to install the long lines on County roadways and uses portable pavement tape applicators or heat to install the intersection markings.
