2023 DEMOGRAPHICS & RESIDENCY DATA

The following data compares county-wide and magisterial district population demographics to the demographic composition of those arrested, charged or stopped (traffic) by Henrico Police.

Statistics include race, ethnicity, gender, and residency status (of Henrico County) for Custodial Arrests, Traffic Stops and Criminal Charges that occurred January 1, 2023, through December 31, 2023. While this data is representative, it is not exhaustive.


County-Wide Crime and Demographic Data

The following charts provide a visual synopsis of the data found in the 2023 Demographic and Residency Reports for Criminal and Traffic Offenses.

2023 INSIGHTS

  • 46% of all custodial and criminal summons arrestees were not Henrico County residents.
  • 67% of all custodial and criminal summons arrestees were male.
  • 60% of total arrestees and criminal summonses identified as Black; 37% identified as White; and .1% identified as Asian.
  • Over half (51%) of the traffic warnings were given to individuals residing outside Henrico County.

DEFINITIONS

Custodial Arrestee and Charges: A person is charged criminally and taken into custody. Those taken into custody can receive multiple criminal charges.

Criminal Summons Arrestees and Charges: A person receives a criminal summons to appear in court and is released on their own recognizance. An arrestee can have multiple criminal charges.

Traffic Summons Arrestee and Charges: A person is issued a traffic summons to appear in court, but not taken into custody. They may receive multiple traffic charges.

Traffic Warning Advisee and Charges: When a person is stopped for a traffic infraction and the officer decides a warning is sufficient. Charges indicate the infractions they were advised to correct.



67% of all custodial and criminal summons arrestees were male. 60% of total arrestees and criminal summonses were identified as Black; 37.6% identified as White; and 1% identified as Asian. 61% of custodial arrests and criminal charges were identified as Black; 37% identified as White. 54% of custodial arrests and criminal summons were identified as residents with 46% non-residents.

In 2023, there were a total of 16,719 charges tied to custodial arrests of 8,603 people. Data for criminal summons shows 2,747 charges among 1,964 people.

In 2023, 50% of individuals who received traffic summons identified as Black; 45.3% identified as White, 3% identified as Asian. Traffic summons involved males (57%) and overall, the 2023 traffic summons involved residents (57%).

In 2023, 52% of individuals who received traffic warnings identified as Black; 39% identified as White; 2.8% identified as Asian. 58% of all traffic warnings involved males. Over half (51%) of the traffic warnings were given to individuals residing outside Henrico County.

There were a total of 33,704 charges tied to traffic summons of 22,376 people. Data for traffic warnings shows 7,259 charges among 7,091 people.

Crime and Demographic Data per Magisterial District

The Brookland District saw a Part I Crime rate decrease in 2032. The district had 2 murders, 3 rapes, 24 robberies and 43 aggravated assaults. Pertaining to non-violent crimes, the Brookland District had 1,389 larcenies, 86 burglaries and 155 motor vehicle thefts.



The Fairfield District saw a Part I Crime rate decrease in 2023. The district had 13 murders, 1 rape, 29 robberies and 99 aggravated assaults. Pertaining to non-violent crimes, the Fairfield District had 241 motor vehicle thefts, 108 burglaries and 1,904 larcenies.



The Three Chopt District saw a Part I Crime rate decrease in 2023. The district had 1 murder, 8 rapes, 15 robberies and 22 aggravated assaults. Pertaining to non-violent crimes, the Three Chopt District had 49 motor vehicle thefts, 39 burglaries and 1,232 larcenies – which saw a slight decrease from 2022.



The Tuckahoe District saw a Part I Crime rate decrease in 2023. The district had 1 murder, 2 rapes, 11 robberies and 27 aggravated assaults. Pertaining to non-violent crimes, the Tuckahoe District had 69 motor vehicle thefts, 43 burglaries and 738 larcenies.



The Varina District saw a Part I Crime rate increase slightly in 2023. The district had 7 murders, 5 rapes, 29 robberies and 63 aggravated assaults. Pertaining to non-violent crimes, the Varina District had 196 motor vehicle thefts, 80 burglaries and 1,326 larcenies.
