Pedestrian Safety Month is winding down, but Henrico’s focus on awareness and infrastructure isn’t letting up

Officials on Tuesday addressed the increase in pedestrian-related crashes and fatalities in Henrico and reiterated the county’s commitment to safety efforts, which includes $1.5 million in new funding for street lighting, planned projects to enhance pedestrian accommodations, and public safety messages.

Pedestrian improvements to greet students as new school year begins Monday

Henrico County has prepared for a safe start to the school year by adding crosswalks, signs with flashing lights and other pedestrian improvements near several schools.

By Tuckahoe Elementary School, crews recently built additional sections of sidewalk with ADA ramps along Forest Avenue as well as a crosswalk with a 6-foot-by-12-foot pedestrian refuge island at Forest and Silverspring Drive.

As vehicle crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists continue to occur with alarming frequency, law enforcement agencies in the Richmond region and other partners are urging travelers to take simple precautions and to avoid distractions, such as mobile phones and headphones.

A video public service announcement with tips for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists is being shared by the police departments or sheriff’s offices of Chesterfield County, Hanover County, Henrico County and the City of Richmond as well as by the Virginia State Police and Virginia Department of Transportation.

Vehicle crashes with pedestrians, bicyclists on the rise

Vehicle crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists are increasing across Henrico County, just as they are throughout Virginia and the United States. To reverse the trend, Henrico is responding with messages discouraging cellphone use and other distractions, targeted enforcement of traffic laws and a review of crosswalks, lighting or other design features that may be beneficial in certain areas.
