Safety is always in fashion! So says Deep Run High School senior Anooshka Pendyal. Sporting one of the bright yellow, reflective vests, Anooshka recorded a public service announcement for Watch Out Ahead Henrico! (WOAH!), the county's pedestrian and road safety campaign.

Construction is almost finished on a sidewalk along Hungary Road that will improve connectivity and safety for pedestrians and others in the Staples Mill Road area of Henrico County. The new sidewalk extends 0.70 miles between Hardings Way Drive and Hungary Spring Road. By linking with existing sidewalks, the Hungary Road sidewalk will help to provide about 6.5 miles of continuous connectivity and safe pedestrian access in an area that includes two parks, two schools, several places of worship, four grocery stores, restaurants and other businesses, and thousands of homes and apartments. Brookland District Supervisor Dan Schmitt said the project is an example of the county listening to its residents.

Hungary Road sidewalk construction nearly complete

Have you picked up your free WOAH! vest yet? Henrico staff and officials have been handing them out all over the county as part of an ongoing effort to reduce pedestrian and bicyclist injuries and fatalities. Funding was provided through Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A), which promotes transportation safety by supporting efforts to reduce roadway fatalities and serious injuries.
