Henrico 4-H Youth Development will offer a four-day summer camp to give rising fourth through eighth graders an opportunity to explore nature and discover the connections between farms, plants, soil and wildlife.
The Sprout & Grow: Cultivating Curiosity camp will be held from 8 a.m. to noon July 13-16 at Fairfield Middle School, 5121 Nine Mile Road. The cost is $40 per camper, with online registration underway. The deadline to sign up is Friday, June 12.
Because they will be working outdoors at a farm site, all campers must wear closed-toe shoes. Among their activities, participants will:
- Plant seeds, transplant seedlings and learn how to water and care for a garden
- Make soil blocks, explore soil textures and dig into compost discoveries
- Identify seedlings and harvest plants from a hydroponics tower
- Learn about local wildlife through observations and model pelts, skulls, tracks and scat
- Test water quality and explore the science behind healthy ecosystems.
