Henrico to celebrate Active Aging Week with free workshops and events, beginning Oct. 1

Henrico County will celebrate Active Aging Week by offering free workshops and events to celebrate healthy living and active lifestyles for adults ages 50 and older.

Active Aging Week is recognized officially from Oct. 5-11, but the county’s programs will begin Thursday, Oct. 1 and continue through Friday, Oct. 9. The activities are organized by the Outreach & Engagement Agency in partnership with the Division of Recreation & Parks. All are free and open to the public. Registration is required only for the Fall Prevention Festival on Oct. 1.

  • Thursday, Oct. 1: Fall Prevention Festival
    10 a.m.-noon at Deep Run Recreation Center, 9900 Ridgefield Parkway

    In partnership with HCA Healthcare, VCU Health and the Henrico Division of Fire, older adults are invited to meet local vendors, receive free health screenings and participate in health and wellness assessments to learn about fall prevention.   • Thursday, Oct. 1: Health and Fitness Expo
    10 a.m.-noon at Eastern Henrico Recreation Center, 1440 N. Laburnum Ave.

    Attendees will experience a wellness educational opportunity to improve their overall emotional, physical and mental health. The expo will offer an opportunity to engage with local vendors, explore resources and participate in fitness demonstrations, including wellness, yoga, line dancing, seated exercise classes and pickleball.

  • Tuesday, Oct. 6: Generations Together
    10-11:30 a.m. at Deep Run Recreation Center, 9900 Ridgefield Parkway

    This intergenerational program is offered in collaboration with The Span Center and it allows older adults to connect with children and others through group activities, such as crafts, train rides and an opportunity to visit a fire truck.

  • Friday, Oct. 9: Annual Active Aging Walk & Fitness Forum
    10 a.m.-noon at Eastern Henrico Recreation Center, 1440 N. Laburnum Ave.

    Older adults of all abilities will be able to enjoy a morning walk around the outdoor track, participate in fitness demonstrations and explore active-living resources. Registration is encouraged but not required; attendees can register via [email protected] or 804-501-5065.
