Description
Part of a Complex of Local Services
The need to centralize the county’s government and to provide adequate jail facilities prompted local officials to take measures to build a new complex. A dedication of the new court facility at Parham and Hungary Spring roads took place in 1974. It was followed by the construction of the County Administration Building, Juvenile Court Center, and Human Services Building. In 1988, the Government Center in Eastern Henrico opened to provide services for a growing population.
In 1992, as stipulated in the original deed, ownership of the 1896 courthouse building at 22nd and East Main streets reverted to the heirs of the original owner because the property no longer served as the county’s Seat of Justice. The heirs sold it at auction later that year.
The present Henrico County Court facility was dedicated on December 2, 1974. The ground breaking for the County Administration Complex took place in 1975. The County Manager’s office, the courts, and the jail remain centralized at their Parham Road location.
The Eastern Government Center was completed in 1988. The complex was created to offer essential services more conveniently to its citizens in the eastern part of the county. The School Board’s administrative offices are located here.
