Henrico County has created an online resource for residents who may be struggling to make mortgage or rent payments or may face other challenges from COVID-19.
The COVID-19 Community Resources webpage launched this week to facilitate the county’s distribution of $1.5 million from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
The funding is available to address community needs, such as housing and food as well as support for small businesses and individuals released from incarceration. It also can supplement assistance to low-income communities with concentrations of COVID-19 cases.
“It’s just helping people make smart decisions about what to do if they’re in some sort of challenging situation as a result of COVID,” said Eric Leabough, director of the Department of Community Revitalization.
The webpage outlines the types of assistance that are available, the qualifying criteria and contact information for the appropriate service provider or organization.
The site complements Henrico’s Know Your Rights and Resources webpage, which offers help to those who may be a victim of illegal discrimination or harassment.
Leabough said the coronavirus pandemic has caused a host of challenges for individuals and families, including unemployment, financial stress, homelessness and health concerns.
“There’s a lot of panic out there, and it may be confusing for someone in crisis to know who to call for help,” he said.
Henrico’s support provided through the CARES Act will be available for up to 12 months or until all funds are spent.
