Ryan Stevens named superintendent of James River Juvenile Detention Center

Ryan M. Stevens Sr. has been appointed superintendent of James River Juvenile Detention Center, effective Sept. 24.

Stevens served as assistant superintendent and then as acting superintendent of the 60-bed facility, following the recent retirement of Michael D. Martin, who had led the facility since 2012. The 60-bed center is located in Powhatan County and serves Henrico, Powhatan and Goochland counties.

Stevens began his employment with Henrico in 1998 as a detention counselor at the Henrico Juvenile Detention Home. In 2000, he was promoted to detention supervisor at the James River facility and later rose to assistant superintendent. He previously served as a correctional sergeant at the Hanover Juvenile Correctional Facility.

James River Juvenile Detention Center, overseen by a regional commission, has a $6.2 million operating budget and an approved full-time staff of 66 employees for fiscal year 2022-23.

Stevens is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at Virginia Union University. He and his wife, Shontai, have three adult sons, Keon, Ryan Jr. and Isaac.
