Virginia Career Works plans job fairs to support Tyson workers, others

Workers impacted by the impending closure of a Tyson Foods chicken processing plant are invited to attend job fairs May 3, 4 and 9 coordinated by Virginia Career Works-Capital Region.

The job fairs, which also are open to anyone seeking new employment, will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. each day at Kitchen 33 and Bakery, 13155 Mountain Road.

Close to 700 workers will be displaced when the Tyson plant on Mountain Road is shuttered May 12. Brian Davis, executive director of the Capital Region Workforce Partnership, noted the intent of the job fairs is to help workers prepare for new employment ahead of the plant’s closure.

“The hope is that making these connections in advance may ultimately lead to quicker hire dates, minimizing the amount of time the individuals will be unemployed,” Davis said. “In some cases, individuals may be able to transition directly into new jobs immediately after their last day at Tyson.”

Employers participating in the job fairs include Henrico County and Henrico County Public Schools, Hanover County, Butterball, Ukrops, The Jefferson, PRG Retail, Virginia Health Services, GRTC and Walmart Distribution. The fairs also will offer information about Virginia Career Works’ job training and work-based learning programs.
