Henrico to expand refuse collection countywide

The Henrico County Department of Public Utilities is expanding its refuse collection service to the currently unserved areas in the Three Chopt, Tuckahoe and Varina magisterial districts. The expansion will make the service available to all areas of the county and will occur in two phases, with the first beginning June 1 and a second beginning in 2027.

Public Utilities currently serves almost 55,000 customers with its weekly refuse collection service. The expansion provides service access for an additional 20,500 residential properties in areas of far western and far eastern Henrico.

The Board of Supervisors identified refuse service expansion as a priority in 2024. Over the past two years, Public Utilities has prepared for the expansion by purchasing additional trucks and hiring staff to serve the new routes.

“We are excited to begin offering our refuse services to additional areas in the county,” Public Utilities Director Bentley Chan said. “This process has been long in discussion and long in the making and is now made possible thanks to the support of the Board of Supervisors, the community and county staff.”

The areas of expansion include the following:

Phase One

  • Between Gaskins Road and Pump Road from Interstate 64 to Patterson Avenue
  • Between North Gaskins Road and North Parham Road from Patterson Avenue to River Road
  • Between Chippenham Parkway and the county line from River Road to the county line
  • Between Interstate 295 and the county line with the city of Richmond, excluding currently served areas

Phase Two

  • Between the county line and Pump Road, North Gaskins Road, River Road and Chippenham Parkway from West Broad Street to the southwestern county line
  • Northwest of the I-295 and I-64 interchange to the county line
  • East of I-295 to the eastern county line from the southeastern county line to Portugee Road

Interested residents can sign up on the Henrico Solid Waste webpage or by calling 804-501-4275.

Henrico’s refuse collection service costs $18 per month, charged bi-monthly, and includes most household trash and garbage. Public Utilities will deliver the refuse container up to 10 business days prior to the selected start date.
