Tax Abatement Program for Derelict Buildings

The County offers a partial tax exemption for demolished or renovated buildings that have been determined by the Building Official to be derelict. The Derelict Building Tax Abatement Program provides a seven-year real estate tax abatement for qualifying demolition or renovation of derelict structures completed under an approved plan. The abatement for demolition applies to the verified cost of demolition to eligible improvements.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted to the Henrico County Real Estate Assessment Division before or at the same time as applying for a building permit.

Fees

There is no fee if exemption is sought for demolition only or for rehabilitation of the derelict building. A $50 non-refundable processing fee will be assessed if the applicant seeks partial exemption for demolition of the existing derelict building and replacement with new construction (refer to separate Reinvest application).
