Henrico implements voluntary water conservation request

Henrico County and other central Virginia localities are implementing voluntary water conservation beginning Wednesday, July 1, due to drought conditions in the region.

This decision came after close monitoring of the James River water levels and collaboration with our regional partners in the City of Richmond and Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover and Powhatan counties and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. Henrico has been releasing water stored at the Virgil R. Hazelett Reservoir at Cobbs Creek into the James since June 1 to assist with water flows, and will continue to do so.

Henrico is not asking residents to follow a watering schedule at this time, but is asking everyone to conserve in the ways that work best for them. Some ways to conserve include:

  • • Shortening showers
  • • Running only full loads of dishes and laundry
  • • Turning off the faucet when brushing your teeth or shaving
  • • Disabling automatic sprinklers for lawn watering

Compliance by residents and businesses in Henrico will help ensure that water remains available to all customers in the region.

While this request does not apply to those using well water, drought conditions are the same for those on wells and conservation is recommended.

We’ve compiled a longer list of water conservation tips and suggestions, available on the Public Utilities website.
