Youth Violence Prevention

Henry Barker, anti-gun violence agent

When conflict happens, what is your initial response?

For many, this question can be challenging. That’s why Henrico County youth impacted by violence created Agi, a character who models positive decision making, conflict resolution, and community connection.

Today, Agi appears across the community through art, storytelling, workshops, branded materials, and more.

How was Agi created?

Youth violence had become a growing concern across Henrico and the United States. In 2023, Henrico County saw an unprecedented rise in youth gun violence, prompting the launch of several initiatives aimed at addressing this epidemic.

Agi was created by a group of youth who had been deeply impacted by violence in their communities. They believed in finding new, youth‑driven approaches to preventing violence beyond adults simply talking at them. Their vision was to create a relatable character who shares similar challenges, making it easier to introduce the tools and social‑emotional skills needed to navigate conflict in a variety of settings.

Who is Agi?

Henry Barker, anti-gun violence agent

Agi is a young Malinois dog who experienced the loss of his sister, Avaya, to gun violence. This tragedy made him deeply committed to creating safe, supportive spaces in his community with a focus on combating violence.

Agi is a calm, grounding figure who helps foster empathy, resilience, and non‑violence among youth and families. He serves as a reminder for kids to choose de‑escalation over harm and to respond to conflict with care rather than aggression.

Through his journey, Agi teaches youth that there is always someone who has your back!

What’s Agi doing now?

Agi is traveling throughout the community to engage with local students. He teaches practical steps for responding to stressful situations without violence and provides a safe space for youth to share their feelings and stories related to community violence, positive decision making, self‑regulation, and substance use prevention.

Agi supports youth through small‑group discussions, peer‑to‑peer conversations, community events, and community‑based workshops, offering multiple avenues for students to learn and connect.

Future Plans for Agi

As Agi continues shaping his future in Henrico, his work is centered on expanding his reach and deepening his impact across the community. After relaunching in Summer 2026, Agi has continued to make new community appearances, share updated youth‑centered content, and create expanded opportunities for connection. In Fall 2026, Agi’s new wave of programming will relaunch with broader offerings and new ways for youth to engage, all delivered in partnership with Henrico Too Smart 2 Start. As this next chapter of programming takes off, so does the movement behind Agi, building a community where young people feel supported, heard, and empowered to thrive.
