The County of Henrico will be constructing accommodations to improve safety, accessibility, mobility, and connectivity along Mayland Drive between Parham Road and Deep Rock Road. The following improvements will be constructed, including: Restripe existing 4-lane undivided roadway to provide for a single travel lane in each direction and a center turn lane along with buffered bike lanes. This is also known as roadway reconfiguration. |

Illustration of proposed changes to Mayland Drive. One lane is dedicated to each direction of traffic with a shared turning lane in the middle. Each side of the roadway has a bike lane with a striped buffer between traffic and bicyclists.
Advantages of roadway reconfigurations include:
- Improves roadway safety
- Reduces vehicular speeds
- Creates space for bicyclists and walkers
- Reduction of rear-end or left turn lane crashes due to the dedicated left-turn lane. This section of Mayland Drive has had a total of 109 crashes from December 2020 – October 2025 have had 57.8% angle crashes and 29.4% rear end crashes with 2 serious injuries and 1 pedestrian involved crash. Approximately 18 crashes per year.
- Fewer lanes for pedestrians to cross
- Low-cost safety improvement with pavement striping since roadway pavement condition warrants attention. By coordinating the paving and restriping efforts, we avoid multiple construction cycles, limit equipment use and reduce traffic –related delays.
Improve the intersection safety of Mayland Drive and Stillman Parkway by converting this unsignalized intersection to a roundabout. The Mayland Drive / Stillman Parkway intersection has experienced a total of 42 crashes with 12 injuries between December 2020 and November 2025; an average of 7 crashes per year. Crashes have also been trending upward at this location with 11 crashes in the first 11 months of 2025 alone. 88% of the crashes at this intersection are angle crashes. Roundabouts are a proven safety countermeasure and are particularly successful at reducing the frequency and severity of angel crashes – which is the predominant crash type at this intersection. FHWA studies show an 82% reduction in fatal and injury crashes when unsignalized intersection like this to are converted to a roundabout.
Phase 1 project limits: Mayland Drive between Parham Road and Andover Hills Drive
Phase 1 project schedule: Start construction March/April 2026; Complete construction: April/May 2026
Phase 2 project limits: Mayland Drive from Andover Hills Drive to Deep Rock Road
Phase 2 project schedule: TBD
We appreciate the community’s understanding and patience as we work to complete the project as safely and efficiently as possible, while delivering long-term benefits for all those who use the roadway.
