Who Can Apply for a Permit?

• Homeowner (with Owner’s Statement of Responsibility)
• Authorized Agent for the Homeowner (with Owner’s Statement of Responsibility)
• Licensed Contractor (must have a valid VA Contractor’s #)

When Can I Apply for a Permit?

• Online at anytime using Build Henrico.
• The Permit Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm for walk-in assistance.

What Can Be Walked Through?

While all permits may be applied for online, our staff is available if additional assistance is desired.  In addition to plan review, we will assist with account creation, site navigation, and scanning of permit documents for upload to Build Henrico.  Review and issuance is possible same-day assuming all required plans and documents are provided by 3:00 PM, limited to the following project types:

• One-Story Additions
• Decks
• Porches, screened or open
• Sun rooms
• Sheds, greater than 256 square feet
• Swimming Pools / Pool Barriers (fences)
• Interior Alterations / Finish Off Space (attics, basements, etc.)
• Re-submittals on existing permits
• Sub-trade Permits (Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing)

*Building Permits on properties that do not have access to public utilities must be reviewed by the Virginia Department of Health and may not be walked through.
