Not sure if your team is playing due to inclement weather? Call the Inclement Weather Hotline at (804) 501-5132. Please call after 3 p.m. on weekdays and after 7:30 a.m. on weekends.
The two primary considerations when making field playability decisions are player safety and long-term impact to the field if played on. Factors that our crews look for that could cause a field to be closed include:
- Muddy, unstable infields
- Standing water on a field
- Saturated grass areas
- Field closed for renovation, repair, or routine maintenance
- Frozen soil
- Unsure or slippery footing
- Grass that may be pulled up by play, above normal wear and tear.
We understand that citizens and tournament/league participants enjoy using our athletic facilities, and our crews make every effort to have fields in playable condition. However, Recreation & Parks will not allow play when field conditions are unsafe or when play could cause damage that would significantly lessen the field’s safety and suitability for future use.
Playing on a field that has been deemed unplayable due to any of the factors above can jeopardize your own safety, as well as cause damage that renders the field unplayable for the remainder of the season.
Field Closure Process
Each day, Park Services personnel check the conditions of athletic fields that are scheduled to be utilized for practices and/or games. They report field conditions to the county’s Sports League Coordinators, who update the field playability hotline each day.
The hotline is updated by 3:00 PM on weekdays (Monday-Friday) and by 7:30 AM on weekends (Saturday & Sunday). The field playability hotline can be accessed by calling (804) 501-5132.

Sports Field Reservations

We are proud to maintain natural grass and synthetic turf athletic fields at park sites throughout Henrico County. We also maintain synthetic turf fields at Freeman, Henrico, Hermitage, and Varina High Schools. Natural grass fields are available for reservation in the spring, summer, and fall. Synthetic turf fields are booked year-round.
Local athletic organizations can request use of these fields, as well as fields on county elementary and middle school grounds, by contacting the county’s Sports League Coordinators. Organized athletic events on Henrico County fields should not take place without prior approval from Henrico Recreation & Parks. Groups wishing to reserve a field must provide a copy of liability insurance.
Groups should also read through all parts of Henrico County Recreation & Parks Youth & Adult Sports Manual to become familiar with our policies and procedures, as they will be held accountable for all the rules and regulations with each reservation.
For more information, or to be added to our athletic organizations mailing list, please call (804) 652-1405 or email [email protected].
