Education plays an important role in the Department of Public Works Mosquito Section’s integrated pest management program. In addition to free mosquito inspections for all Henrico County residents, inspectors are available to provide presentations to schools, individuals, and homeowner/community groups. The Mighty Mosquito Mission
This is a program centered on educating Henrico’s youngest residents. Mosquito team staff visit elementary schools across the county asking mini-mosquito inspectors to help us Fight-the-Bite in their own backyards. The lesson includes an anatomy overview, a life-cycle lesson, and habitat identification. The program includes a lecture and hands-on activity. Fight-The-Bite
“Fight-the-Bite” means picking one day per week and walking your property while turning over and/or eliminating any containers that are holding water. Examples of some of the container types are corrugated pipe from downspouts, bird baths, recycling/trash cans without a lid, toys, tarps, potted plants with saucers, tires, wheelbarrows, and anything that can hold 1/10th of an inch of water for more than five days. Removing water from your property prevents mosquitoes from laying eggs and developing into adults. The Asian Tiger mosquito is our #1 nuisance mosquito and lays eggs strictly in man-made containers. If water cannot be dumped and/or removed, the use of BTI-based larvicides is suggested.
