The Henrico History Section, a part of the Division of Recreation and Parks, is dedicated to researching, interpreting, and presenting the rich history of Henrico County. Through thoughtfully developed programs and exhibitions at county-owned historic sites, we strive to engage the public and preserve the county’s unique heritage for future generations.


The Historic Roadside Marker and Building Plaque Programs
Our historical markers enhance public awareness and appreciation of Henrico County’s rich history by identifying and recognizing significant historic resources. Roadside markers share compelling narratives that highlight notable individuals, events, and places that have shaped the county’s past. To find out more about adding markers in the county, call 804-501-5123. There’s also information about the application process in the document below.


Henrico County History Archives
The Archives contain a range of primary source materials such as manuscripts, photographs, personal papers, and other historical documents. Much of the archival material focuses on the Meadow Farm Sheppard Family Papers (1770–1980).

Located at 3812 Nine Mile Road, the Library and Archives are available to those interested in exploring local history. If you are conducting research or would like to learn more about our collections, please contact us for assistance.

Historic Facilities

The County of Henrico owns a variety of historic sites that are administered by the Division of Recreation and Parks. Most are open to the public and serve the community in a variety of ways. Some are museums that interpret the history of the County and regional culture of the Richmond/Henrico metropolitan area. Others have historic components, tours, displays and programs, but are also available to rent and are utilized for a variety of classes and programs. Some are structures in a park setting that can be enjoyed while driving by or stopping to read roadside markers.


VA 250-Henrico

VA250 commemorates the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, the Revolutionary War, and US Independence in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Henrico County’s VA250 committee is part of these larger state and national efforts to recognize the people and events of the American colonies fight for independence and its founding through an ongoing series of programs, events, and projects.

While state and federal efforts may peak in 2026, Henrico County will continue offering a variety of ways to learn about the people and events of the past as well as to engage in dialogue on what liberty, freedom, and how the legacy of events 250 years ago shape the present and what our citizens hope to see for the future.
