County’s response to Winter Storm Fern ‘makes us proud to live in Henrico’

“Logistics on this storm were simply off the charts. We had to think how we were going to get 911 operators to work their shifts, when in fact they would not be able to drive in,” County Manager John Vithoulkas said.

Public Works had 300 employees working round the clock on 110 trucks, plows and other pieces of equipment. Recreation & Parks operated 13 vehicles, delivering food and personnel for the Emergency Communications Center and other agencies.

Henrico’s parks, recreation centers, libraries and public-use areas to close at 4 p.m. Saturday for winter storm

The public is encouraged to limit travel as snow is expected beginning tonight and to prepare for roads to be impassable beginning Sunday morning. Power outages also are expected. Crews are ready to begin road clearing as soon as conditions warrant. Henrico braces for snow and ice, encourages residents to be ready for potential power outages

In anticipation of the storm, Henrico has declared a state of local emergency and opened its Emergency Operations Center.

Officials urge residents to avoid traveling, if possible, once road conditions become hazardous and to have 72 hours of emergency food, water, medications and supplies in the event of a loss of power.
