Henrico boosts access to free naloxone to reduce opioid overdose deaths

The pilot project is being funded by allocations made to the county from opioid litigation settlements. Henrico received $17,986 from the Virginia Opioid Abatement Authority and contributed an additional $5,000 in settlement funds made directly to the county.

Individuals are encouraged to take a box of naloxone if they or someone they know is at risk of an opioid overdose. Each box has two doses of naloxone. Individuals are asked to take only one box per visit, as supplies are limited.

The Board of Supervisors held a regular meeting Tuesday, Feb. 10. An agenda and complete video of the meeting are available on the county website.    Highlights include:  Employee recognized for dedication and service during Winter Storm Fern   Winter Storm Fern made getting around extremely difficult for travelers, and county employees were no exception. At the Board’s work session, County Manager John A. Vithoulkas recognized custodial maintenance worker Julie Smith.

Bhikkhu Pannakara, spiritual leader of the Walk for Peace, spoke to county officials and other supporters during a lunchtime stop. He emphasized the importance of being happy with what you have, of practicing mindfulness, of avoiding the distraction of cellphones and other devices, and of adopting peacefulness as a mindset.

“We are mindful on each and every step we make,” he said. “I focus on my breathing when I walk, it's not just a walk, but walk with practicing mindfulness.”

Henrico temporarily waives drop-off fees at public-use areas as crews work to resume normal trash collection

Residents may drop off their household waste at the Springfield Road Public Use Area, 10600 Fords Country Lane, and the Charles City Road Public Use Area, 2075 Charles City Road. The normal fee of $3 per vehicle per trip will be waived through Sunday, Feb. 22.

County’s response to Winter Storm Fern ‘makes us proud to live in Henrico’

“Logistics on this storm were simply off the charts. We had to think how we were going to get 911 operators to work their shifts, when in fact they would not be able to drive in,” County Manager John Vithoulkas said.

Public Works had 300 employees working round the clock on 110 trucks, plows and other pieces of equipment. Recreation & Parks operated 13 vehicles, delivering food and personnel for the Emergency Communications Center and other agencies.

The public is encouraged to limit travel as snow is expected beginning tonight and to prepare for roads to be impassable beginning Sunday morning. Power outages also are expected. Crews are ready to begin road clearing as soon as conditions warrant.

In anticipation of the storm, Henrico has declared a state of local emergency and opened its Emergency Operations Center.

Officials urge residents to avoid traveling, if possible, once road conditions become hazardous and to have 72 hours of emergency food, water, medications and supplies in the event of a loss of power.

Board of Supervisors appoints new Sustainability and Resilience Advisory Committee

The 10 members of the Sustainability and Resilience Advisory Committee will serve as formal advisors to the county and will provide a community perspective on issues related to environmental sustainability, resilience and strategies for adapting to climate change.

SRAC will complement the work of two other groups focused on the environment - Henrico's Environmental Action Resource Team and Keep Henrico Beautiful.

In outlining his priorities for the year, Cooper said Henrico will continue to support investments in education as well as affordable homeownership, pedestrian safety and economic development.

“I’m filled with both excitement and humility, and a sense of duty as we embark on this journey together, continuing our collective efforts to make Henrico County an even better place to live, work, play and visit, and raise your family,” he said.

Henrico invites community to ‘Spread the Love’ by creating Valentine’s Day cards for older adults

Schools, faith-based organizations and other groups as well as individuals and families are encouraged to participate by creating cards that will be shared at local nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Cards will be collected through Friday, Feb. 6, and should be generic with an uplifting message in celebration of Valentine’s Day.

The free leadership program is designed to strengthen connections between Henrico and its multicultural communities while encouraging civic participation and empowerment.

Entering its sixth year, My Henrico Academy offers up to 20 immigrant and descendant participants an opportunity to meet with county officials, tour facilities and deepen their understanding of local programs, services and resources.

Unlike Richmond and 10 other localities, Henrico has not approved a tax on disposable plastic bags. Consumers who believe they may have been improperly charged a bag tax in Henrico are encouraged to present their receipts to the businesses and request a refund. They also are asked to report the issue to the county.

Henrico to accept Christmas trees for recycling Dec. 26 through Jan. 9

Henrico County will accept Christmas trees for recycling into mulch from Friday, Dec. 26 through Friday, Jan. 9. The free service, offered by Keep Henrico Beautiful and the Department of Public Utilities, preserves landfill space and protects the environment. It is available to Henrico residents only. Nonresidents and commercial haulers are excluded.

Henrico Area Mental Health & Developmental Services earns praise, reaccreditation from CARF International

The accreditation, which extends through November 2028, represents the highest endorsement an agency can receive. In addition, CARF offered no recommendations for improvement – an accomplishment achieved by only 3% of 9,600 peer-reviewed agencies. MHDS’ nearly 500 employees provided services to more than 10,000 individuals in fiscal year 2024-25.

Henrico Board of Supervisors adopts tighter regulations on vape shops

New stores offering products defined as “recreational substances” would be allowed only in the B-3 Business and M-1 Industrial zoning districts and would also be required to receive a provisional use permit. That would require public hearings and approval from the Board of Supervisors.

In addition, such stores would not be allowed within 1,000 feet of a school or 2,000 feet of a religious institution, day care center, public park or existing store selling recreational substances.
